Dr. Speer and the UK-1 DIMES (JC41) Cruise through the western Drake Passage Dr. Speer is completing a successful cruise aboard the RRS James Cook. The central goal of the cruise was to deploy 9 moorings in 4 distinct areas. Six of the moorings will be deployed in a cluster of 15 km diameter in the northern Drake Passage. Their main purpose is to investigate how the energetic mesoscale eddies of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) are dissipated, and how they interact with the regional internal wave field. Oceanography professors to lead 'Mercury Project' Dr. William Landing and Dr. Philip Froelich have received two $500,000 grants and will lead a team of researchers to study the harmful effects of mercury and the danger it poses when it gets into the food chain. Environmental Health and Safety Courses for January All laboratory users are required to complete the classroom-based Hazardous Waste Awareness/Introduction to Laboratory Safety/Hazard Communication course initially and an annual refresher thereafter. The refresher may be completed online at http://www.safety.fsu.edu/trainingonline-hazwaste.html. If you have not completed your annual refresher you should do so immediately.
